Children and Chiropractic

"As the twig is bent, so grows the tree."

The above quote explains why children need chiropractic care. Many people are surprised to find out that we adjust children. Dr. Zerba is very proficient at detecting and correcting subluxations in children. In fact, all of his children were adjusted immediately after birth and continue to have their spines checked on a regular basis. We see children in our office everyday and we have a complete library of chiropractic information dedicated to children. We realize that many of you have questions about adjusting children so I would like to take this opportunity to explain and address some of your concerns.

It starts at birth

We all know how stressful the birth process is not only for the mother, but also for the infant. The newborn’s neck is twisted and pulled in an effort to emerge from the birth canal. Many infants begin their precious lives with a subluxation from this ordeal. We all want our newborns to begin their lives with perfect health. However, we often forget about subluxations. Infants should be taken to their Chiropractor as soon as possible after birth. The Chiropractor can check for any possible subluxations and correct them using adjustments. An adjustment for a child is very different from that of an adult. The amount of thrust used to adjust a child is typically between 6 to 8 ounces. Also, the audible sound that many times accompanies the adult adjustment may not be heard. The technique is so gentle that many babies do not even know they have been adjusted. By clearing the infant of possible subluxations, he or she can begin life with an optimal spinal and nervous system that can benefit them throughout life.

Birth is just the beginning of growth for our children. As babies grow and become more active, their spines change from the single curve to the quad-curve form of adults. This happens as a child learns to lift their head, crawl and walk. Babies are constantly moving, falling down, running into things and exploring their new world. Each of these things helps shape their spines and bodies. Their spines are growing faster now than at any other time of their life. It is extremely important to make certain that their spines are developing as they should. Subluxations can cause abnormal posture, which applies tension on vertebrae, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. This increased tension interferes with blood flow to internal organs. Lack of oxygen in cells, tissues, and organs causes dysfunction, lowered immune resistance, and disease. One or more parts of the body may begin to fail, as well as health in general. Subluxations can also foster the onset of sickness and disease as the body weakens. Having subluxations corrected can help with many childhood ailments such as ear infections, ADD/hyperactivity, colic, bed-wetting, asthma, respiratory distressfevers and allergies.

As babies grow into children, they become even more active and experience even more chances for subluxations. During this time it is also extremely important to have your children checked for scoliosisScoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. If scoliosis is caught early enough, it can be corrected without surgery. No matter how old your children are, it is imperative that you talk with your chiropractor to set up a spinal check for your children. Having a healthy spine is critical to having a healthy life.

Why is a "slipped disc" unlikely?
Separating each spinal vertebra is a disc. Its fibrous outer ring holds in a jelly-like material. Because of the way a disc attaches to the spinal bones above and below it, it can't actually "slip." However, a disc can bulge, tear, herniate, thin and collapse. But it can't slip.
How long does it take to form a bone spur?
Many who begin chiropractic care think their problem happened "last week when you bent over funny." But pictures of the spine tell a different story. Chiropractors know it can take your body years to deposit the calcium necessary to form a bone spur. It's your body's response to stress due to gravity or joint malfunction. And chiropractic care can help.
